Who is Marie Kondo?

Marie Kondo, also known as Konmari, has gained popularity for being “The Decluttering Queen”. She is a Japanese organizing consultant who started showing interest in tidying things up when she was five years old. She became more serious about decluttering her home and took it to the next level in 2015 when she gave birth to her daughter. She also wrote four books that have collectively sold millions of copies around the world.

Marie Kondo Popularity in the U.S.

How did Marie Kondo take a simple concept of decluttering and make it so popular in America? While Konmari was developing herself as a Japanese organizing consultant, she also birthed a concept that has brightened our hearts, ”Sparking Joy.”

The “Spark Joy” Concept

What items “spark joy” when you look at them? The Marie Kondo Method is a re-thinking of organization. Decluttering sounds so tedious. Doesn’t the idea of keeping things that “spark joy” bring a refreshing feeling? Marie emphasizes that knowing the stuff that sparks joy is more important than knowing what should be discarded.

Back in 2019, I found it hard to fit in, even in my own house. I started to question things like why am I not comfortable or at peace? My mom recommended two books “The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up” and “Spark Joy” by Marie Kondo. I was hooked. I finished the books in two days and decluttered my space within a week. I discovered a way to keep things that spark joy. Like me, I know that many other people have changed their way of thinking and overall well-being by using the “Spark Joy” concept.

 The Categorization of Things

Marie Kondo grew up in Japan where she lived in tiny houses. Because of the small space, she was able to master the art of decluttering.

Marie’s idea of categorization works well with Americans who have big spaces and houses. We fill the space. Our documents are “organized” all over the house. We have clothes in multiple places. Instead of bringing joy, it causes irritation. Categorization will save time. Marie Kondo recommends that we should arrange things based on their category:

  • Clothes
  • Books
  • Papers
  • Miscellaneous
  • Sentimental Things

Keeping things that spark joy and arranging them based on category are two of the things that have made Marie Kondo famous in the U.S. The concept is simple, effective and beneficial and that’s how Konmari has gained popularity in the U.S. in such a short period of time.
